Harvard Medical School Admission Process

Before You Apply


As a student admitted to HMS, this is an extraordinary diversity in accomplishments, interests, backgrounds, and talents, these are also people with a common interest, self-motivated and visionary in ambition with compassion in all their approaches towards healing. HMS Committee on Admissions always calculates applications based on criteria that range from students' academic records and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores for their extra activities.


And while research in community service experience in the field of health care matters, all students are expected to showcase their knowledge of biological and physical sciences. HMS's best students are always those with good academic backgrounds, that in includes humanities and social sciences. 


HMS has put things in place to take talented students from different ethnic backgrounds and economic states most especially from communities with bad states in representing them in the medical profession. A doctor from Harvard is always seen looking toward excellence as a way of life both personal and professional. Those that find themself in these categories have a chance to apply to HMS. 


When to apply and ADMISSION TIMELINE


In Early May, the AMCAS application opens

In early June, the AMCAS application becomes available for submission 

In Early July, HMS secondary opens and becomes available for submission 

September Interviews begin 

October 15 final deadline for the AMCAS application 

October 22 final deadline for HMS secondary application and all materials 

[letters, MCAT scores, etc]

October 31 AMCAS transcript deadline. All transcripts must be received

                                before this date

January         Interview concludes 

Early march All admission decisions are sent out via email on the same date, whether

                                candidates are accepted, declined, or waitlisted. Candidates accepted or waitlisted

                                or admitted are sent financial aid materials. Families should file tax returns, FAFSA,

                                and Need Access applications as soon as possible.

Mid to late march Deadline for submission of all financial aid application materials including

                                tax returns. Evaluation of completed files and email notification of financial aid

                                award letters begins on a rolling basis.

April         Admitted student preview days

April 17         Admitted students should narrow their acceptance offers down to three schools.

April 30         Admitted student planning to enroll at HMS must select the “commit to enroll”

                                option on the choose your school tool in their AMCAS application.

June 1 Admitted student planning to enroll at HMS must select the “Commit to enroll”

                                option on the choose your school tool in their AMCAS application.

Early to mid-June Immunization and health forms deadline

July         Email notification of all term bills sent to students 

July 1 Deadline to submit all transcripts to the admission office 

Early August Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony


The admitted student who plans to enroll in HMS must choose “type to enroll” there is an option in choosing your medical school tool, on or before April 30. If the date you choose falls on a weekend it means you have to choose another date during work days to reapply.


And in these cases, you are expected to withdraw your applications from other schools to which you have applied and offered admission, as a student you can update the selection at any time, but you have to choose one school at a time. As an admitted student who has all interest to enroll in HMS, you must choose the plan you want to enroll in, that is in times of choosing your medical school tool which should be on or before June 1.


With professional courtesy to other applicants and medical schools, as an applicant, you should make your selection as earlier as possible once your plan have being confirmed, but not more than June 1. Admission Decisions 

HMS as the case may be does not have an early decision in the program or any policy for enrolling admission. All admissions decisions are sent out via email on the same date in early March, and all admissions decisions are final, whether candidates are accepted, declined, or waitlisted.  


Deferred Admissions 

Requesting for deferred matriculation and admission are only available to accepted students. So such a student who wishes to apply for deferred must write to the faculty Associate Dean for Admissions with the reason why you requesting deferred and your plans during this time of deferral. At this stand there is no guarantee for you on deferred will be granted. 


If approved, you should have it in mind that deferrals are just for one year, though it is possible to renew for students involved in multi-year fellowship programs. There is a committee for admission that has generally supportive of proposals that provide participation in intellectually rewarding opportunities and service programs during the time of deferral from HMS.


As a student who chooses to defer, you should have it in mind and carefully consider the financial implications of deferring, because in future years tuition and unit loan amounts always rise every year.


Choosing an MD Track 


A student that applies for HMS MD Program chooses between two curriculum tracks- Pathways and HST. you as a student can apply to the HST track, to the pathways track, or both. Applications to both tracks in no way prejudice your chance of acceptance to either one. you should indicate your candidacy for the Medical Scientist Training Program of MD Ph.D. combined degree. As a student, you should get familiar with the unique aspect of each track before applying.


Any student who wishes to pursue a dual degree has the choice to apply after matriculation into the MD program to combine degree programs. At times combined degree programs are offered in conjunction with other Schools of Harvard university with MIT  and are open to both Pathways and HST students.


Pathways 

The pathways MD curriculum incorporates pedagogical approaches that foster active learning and critical thinking, earlier clinical experience,  advanced clinical and basic and population science experiences, and a scholar project that will allow every student to plan an individual pathway to the MD degree, 135 students per year are taken to study in Pathways. read

 

Health Sciences and Technology [HST] 

Combining the extensive resources of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT], the HST curriculum will get you well-prepared for an interdisciplinary research career in academic medicine as well as clinical care.


With this type of curriculum, you will only be focusing on biological, chemical, physical, and engineering sciences and collaborating with Harvard and MIT faculty on substantive, groundbreaking research. Courses are taken at both Harvard Medical School and MIT. HST admitted only 30 students per year to study with them.


MD PhD 

The MD Ph.D. combined degree prepares students to become leading physician-scientists. The strongest in these cases have also completed advanced coursework in science and mathematics, and have substantial prior research experience. All applications are evaluated on academic performance, and also on the strength of research experience, personal statement, description of research interests, and inherent passion and commitment to research.


A student who applies to HMS must complete the standard course requirements for consideration by Harvard Medical School in other to meet the minimum needs for admission into a graduate program in any area of interest for the Ph.D. degree. Admission to the MD Ph.D. program is contingent on admission into HMS Pathways and HST track.


Coursework: Harvard requires you to complete the below before enrolling:

  • Behavioral sciences: one semester to one year you should include behavioral  sciences ( eg. psychology, sociology, etc)

  •  Biology: one year with lab, which should include cellular and molecular biology.

  • Chemistry:  two years in the lab should include inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

  • Physics: one-year lab needed, ( Note HST applicants should complete additional calculus-based physics courses.

  • Math: one year including calculus and statistics. ( HST applicants should complete additional math courses, such as differential equations and linear algebra).
